Chapter 2

Author pov:-

Market

"Are kaka wo wali dikhao na." Avni said to the shopkeeper who is showing her bangles from the past half an hour.

( Uncle, show me that one )

" kon se wali betiya?" the shopkeeper asked Avni for the hundredth time

( which one daughter? )

"Are kaka wo laal wali, jo wo sabse peche rakhi hai"

( Uncle, that red one - the one placed right at the back )

"Beti pichle adhe ghante se mein tumhe chudiya dikha raha hu tum koi lene bhi wali ho ya nhi" he said getting annoyed.

( Daughter, I've been showing you bangles for the last half-hour, are you actually going to buy one or not? )

"Kaka koi pasand ayegi tabhi to lungi na, Ase he koi bhi thoda na le lu"

( Kaka, you should buy the one you actually like, right? I'm not just going to buy any random one )

Avni replied back and her father standing beside her shakes his head listening to his daughter it's already been more than two hours they are in the market going from one shop to the other.

After saying their farewell to the Thakur couple his daughter forced him to come straight to the market and from then on they had gone to almost every shop but his daughter still hadn't found anything to her liking.

"Avni aur kitna samay lagega ab mein thak gya hu beta" Avni's father said after getting tired of roaming around behind her.

( Avani, how much longer will it take? I'm tired now, beta. )

"Baba buss kuch samay aur" Avni replied without looking at her father her full focus on the bangles.

( Just a little longer papa )

Her father looked at her totally ignoring him for bangles and shook his head on the childish behaviour of his daughter with a smile on his face. After that he understood that he can't do anything other than stand there and let his daughter decide.

"Baba mein ye wali chudiya lungi aur inn ke sath ye wali Payal bhi"

( Baba, I'll take these bangles, and these anklets too )

Avni said god knows after how long and her father and shopkeeper sigh in relief that finally she liked something. After that avni's father paid the shopkeeper fast without much bargaining scared that her daughter would change her mind again. The shopkeeper also wrapped her stuff in a newspaper fast. After taking their stuff they started going out of the market when Avni noticed a kulfi stall.

"Baba Mujhe kulfi bhi khani hai" She said holding his hand with one hand and pointing the other one towards the kulfi stand.

( Papa I want to eat ice-cream )

Her father looked in the direction she was pointing and saw a stall near the end of the market and then looked at his daughter whose eyes were shining with excitement and after looking at her face he couldn't say no and nodded his head.

Seeing his father agreeing Avni couldn't control her excitement and run towards the stall "Avni Bhag maat lag jayegi" he said walking behind her.

( Avani, don't run, you'll get hurt.)

"Bhaiya Mujhe ak keser pista wali kulfi dedo"

( Brother, please give me an ice-cream )

The shopkeeper nodded and gave her the kulfi she wanted and her father paid for it and they started walking outside again.

Avni was enjoying her kulfi while walking when she heard noises near the entrance of the market and a big crowd was gathered there. They both thought of watching why so many people are there and what are they watching.

As soon as they reached the crowd Avni could see a commotion happening in the middle of the crowd, a person was lying in the ground he must be in his early twenties with blood on his face maybe his nose was broken too because blood was coming out of it. His clothes are smudge in sand and anyone can tell that he has been beaten nicely.

A man was standing in front of him with his back towards the crowd, Avni is not able to see his face but by his body she can say that he is not much older than her and the way he is standing he must be involved in this fight too, as she was making assumptions about the situation the younger man hold the collar of the one on the ground and started punching him on the face without stopping. Seeing such a scene happening in front of her Avni couldn't believe her eyes. How can that man beat someone mercilessly in a public place and everyone is just standing like a statue without doing anything.

"Baba wo unko ase kyu maar rahe hai?"

( Baba, why is he hitting him? )

Avni asked turning towards her father. "Aur koi unki madad kyu nhi kar raha?"

( And why is no one helping? )

"Beta iss par Dhyan mat do, chalo hum ghar chalte hai dair ho Rahi hai" he said without giving her any answers.

( don't pay attention to this, let's go home - it's getting late. )

"Par baba wo unko kitni buri tarah se maar rahe hai, koi kuch karta kyu nhi? Hume unki madad karni chaiye."

( But papa, look how badly he is beating him-why isn't anyone doing anything? We should help him. )

She said again turning towards the man who is now kicking the other person. Avni can see his face now and he is looking very angry. His face is clear of any harm not a single line on the black kurta he is wearing like he is not the one beating someone to death. Only by his face can you tell that he is angry, his eyes are dark and high jaw is clenched tightly like he won't stop today and whoever dares to interfere he won't leave them either. She felt scared just by watching him from far away.

"Avni ye unko roj ka kaam hai, ye bade ghar ke log hai inko koi kuch nahi Bol sakta. Hume bhi inn sab mein nhi padna chaiye."

( Avni, this is a daily routine for them, they belong to a wealthy family, and no one can say anything to them. We shouldn't get involved in all this either. )

Avni's father held her hand and took her away from the fight.

The whole ride home Avni couldn't take the scene out of her head, more specifically the person who caused the scene, the way he was beating that person without showing any mercy, his eyes which were red in anger and his clenched jaw. This was the first time she saw something like that. And how no one was doing anything as if they were scared of something or someone? And even her father who told her to ignore everything. And what he meant by "bade ghar ke?" Who was he?

Even after reaching home he was the only one in her head, even if she tried she couldn't take him out of her thoughts. That night Avni was not able to sleep. Even when she closed her eyes to sleep, she could see his face only.

The next day Avni got up early and got ready for the temple to attend the morning prayer. This is her every day routine. Her house is just behind the temple so it only takes her five minutes to reach.

After reaching the temple she bought flowers and other items needed for the prayer from a shop outside the temple and started searching for her father.

She saw her father talking with someone near the main building, she is not able to see the face because he is standing with his back towards her but as she keeps getting near. She saw who her father was speaking too.

"Ye yha kya kar rahe hai?"

( What is he doing here? )
